Blake Mycoskie

Founder of TOMS

The Story

Blake Mycoskie was a restless entrepreneur, always on the lookout for his next big idea. He started his first business selling greeting cards when he was only 19 years old. The venture was a modest success, but Blake was hungry for more. He knew he was meant to make a difference in the world.

In 2006, Blake took a trip to Argentina and was struck by the number of children he saw without shoes. He learned that many of these children suffered from foot injuries and infections, which could be prevented by wearing shoes. Blake was moved by their plight and decided to do something about it.

He had a crazy idea: start a shoe company that would donate a pair of shoes to a child in need for every pair of shoes sold. His friends thought he was crazy, but Blake was determined to make it work.

He founded TOMS Shoes, and the company quickly gained a following, with people around the world buying the company's distinctive canvas shoes. Blake's message of "one for one" resonated with people, who saw it as a simple yet effective way to make a positive impact.

As the company grew, Blake expanded the product line to include eyewear and coffee, with the same "one for one" model. He even joked that he might start a "one for one" dating app, where for every match made, the company would donate a pair of shoes to a child in need.

Despite his success, Blake remained humble and focused on his mission. He often traveled to developing countries to personally distribute shoes and meet with beneficiaries of the company's programs. He even once lost his shoes while visiting a village, and had to walk back to his hotel barefoot. But he didn't mind, knowing that the children he had helped were able to enjoy the simple pleasure of having a pair of shoes.

Today, TOMS Shoes is a global brand, and Blake is considered one of the most innovative and socially responsible entrepreneurs of his generation. His commitment to giving back has inspired countless others to make a positive impact in their own communities, and even on their own feet.
